About this ebook

The fifth novel in Steven Erikson's groundbreaking fantasy series. With millions of copies in print, the New York Times bestselling Malazan Book of the Fallen series is truly an empire—one of the most iconic and celebrated series in epic fantasy.

After decades of internecine warfare, the tribes of the Tiste Edur have at last united under the Warlock King of the Hiroth, There is peace—but it has been exacted at a terrible price: a pact made with a hidden power whose motives are at best suspect, at worst deadly.

To the south, the expansionist kingdom of Lether, eager to fulfill its long-prophesized renaissance as an Empire reborn, has enslaved all its less-civilized neighbors with rapacious hunger. All, that is, save one—the Tiste Edur. And it must be only a matter of time before they too fall—either beneath the suffocating weight of gold, or by slaughter at the edge of a sword. Or so destiny has decreed.

Yet as the two sides gather for a pivotal treaty neither truly wants, ancient forces are awakening. For the impending struggle between these two peoples is but a pale reflection of a far more profound, primal battle—a confrontation with the still-raw wound of an old betrayal and the craving for revenge at its seething heart.

About halfway through the book, and I think I'm done with it. Tehol and Bugg are splendid characters with some of the best dialogue in the series thus far, and I wish I could get the rest of their story. Honestly, though, the Tiste Edur plot line is just cringe worthy and outside of the Beddict brothers everyone feels decidedly one dimensional even with Erikson's admirable attempts at development. Going to get the major plot points from a friend and give this a pass.

I am hooked on this series and this novel has been the best so far. I cannot put it down and alternate between being caught in suspense and out loud laughter.

Initially I didn't want to read this book. I let the reviews color my feelings. And it was such a departure from what I was used to in the series that I decided not to read it. And so I skipped this book. And when I was done with book 6, I knew I had to read this one from the beginning again. And my mind was utterly blown: Trull Sengar.
