About this ebook

The first novel in Steven Erikson’s groundbreaking Malazan Book of the Fallen—the New York Times bestselling epic of warring empires, ancient gods, and ordinary soldiers caught in battles that will reshape the world.

The Malazan Empire simmers with discontent, bled dry by interminable warfare, bitter infighting and bloody confrontations with the formidable Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, ancient and implacable sorcerers. Even the imperial legions, long inured to the bloodshed, yearn for some respite. Yet Empress Laseen's rule remains absolute, enforced by her dread Claw assassins.

For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his squad of Bridgeburners, and for Tattersail, surviving cadre mage of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the many dead. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, yet holds out. It is to this ancient citadel that Laseen turns her predatory gaze.

However, it would appear that the Empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister, shadowbound forces are gathering as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand...

I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE STORY OVER 15 YRS AGO... LOVED IT!!! GOT AS FAR AS THAT FAMOUS WARRIOR WHO BATTLED HIS WAY TO THE VERY GATES OF THE PLACE HE WAS HEADED FOR WHEN HIS ARMY WAS STOPPED AND HE HIMSELF WAS NAILED TOA CROSS? WITHIN SIGHT OF HIS OBJECTIVE AND THE CRAVEN MEN WITHIN THE WALLS REFUSED TO SALLY FORTH TO RESCUE HIM... ONE MAN WITHIN THE WALLS ARGUED TO GO TO HIS RESCUE AND WAS OVER RULED.. HE THEN TOOK A LONG BOW AND KILLED THAT FAMOUSE WARRIOR HANGING ON THAT POLE OR PERHAPS IT WAS A CROSS.. KILLED HIM TO END HIS SUFFERING... REMINDED ME OF THAT MOVIE LAST OF THE MOHICAN... WHERE THE STAR OF THAT MOVIE DID THE SAME THING FOR A COMPANION THAT GOT CAUGHT ALSO...

It throws you right in the middle without training wheels. A lot of characters to learn and not easy reading at first. But at the same time, it's not just building up to a climax at the end- there are exhilarating and story-important scenes and battles right from the beginning, and through the middle and end that keep you engaged throughout. Excited to continue the Series.

Some consider this series even better then A Song of Ice and Fire and I would not blame them. For one it's actually finished lol. Don't get me wrong I still think George is my number one but Steve is a close second. Either way the sheer level of detail Steve infuses in the different cultures in his universe are just astronomical and that's just merely one facet amongst many that makes this series awesome. Read it, love it, thank me later!
